POLICE: Stay off roads

MASON CITY – Police are warning residents to avoid travel at this time due to extremely dangerous weather conditions.

The Mason City Police Department and The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office are encouraging motorists to stay off the roadways for anything other than emergency travel. White out conditions are making travel dangerous and impossible in most areas.

The National weather service has issued several warnings for our state. High wind warnings are in effect for much of western Iowa. There is a blizzard warning covering much of north central Iowa running south and east to just south of Interstate 80, and most of northeast and east central Iowa is under a winter storm warning. All warning are in effect at least until noon Monday.

With all the warnings, high winds are going to cause issues for larger vehicles. If you are driving a high-profile vehicle, please concentrate on the task of driving and reduce your distractions. For all vehicles, leave ample space between vehicles in case a gust of wind alters the path of your vehicle or vehicles traveling near you.

School has already been canceled for Monday in Mason City as brutal cold is expected.
