MASON CITY – Tuesday night, around 4:30 pm, Mason City police started receiving complaints about adults selling magazine subscriptions and requesting donations for their organization – Midwest Circulations, LLC. Officers located several salespeople who were from out of state. They were arrested for soliciting without a permit (city ordinance) and jailed.

City ordinance requires all non-profit transient merchants and solicitors to apply for a vending permit before soliciting. Mason City police indicated that they have had recurrent issues over the years with a van dropping salespeople from out of state off in neighborhoods, usually after normal business hours or on weekends. These salespeople typically solicit as much as they can in a short time and are off to a new city by the next day.

There was no immediate word if these people had joined the Mason City Chamber of Commerce.

“As far as the validity of this organization, I have no specific comment,” said Captain Mike McKelvey. “There is no address or phone number on the sales brochures the peddlers were using. One of the complaints we received is that the salespeople were not issuing receipts so people who purchased subscriptions may not have any info to attempt to contact the company. These people may want to contact their banks to determine if placing a stop on their checks is prudent.”

The names of those arrested by Mason City police are: Jessica Garcia; Montrell Wright; Noah Jordan; and Talyce Patterson.

  1. Three African Americans ran up to my 18 yo daughter in CL and tried to sell her magazine subscriptions while she was attempting to get into her car and when she politely declined to purchase any one of the young men tried to give her a hug. When my daughter backed away to avoid the hug from the stranger the young man played the race card. My daughter simply stated his color had nothing to do with it, but that she doesn’t hug strangers.

  2. The guy that came to my door showed me his permit. I thought it was strange that when he saw my NRA sticker on my door he thought it meant National Relief Association. I did tell him that every time he left a house or another like him the police are called, he stated that he was already taken in for questioning and released.

  3. There is another bunch going around claiming they are from Direct T.V. The logo on their shirts says Sattco. I checked with Direct T.V. and they do not use door to door sales for anything. They are fake.

    1. Same bunch. Brittany (AKA Ashley) came to my door selling Direct TV. She didn’t make it into my house.

        1. Met her at my front door and then spotted her in the jail population later. Have fun with your own reality.
