Obit: Janice Broome, 79

Janice Broome, 79, of 216 5th Street N.W., Nora Springs, passed away gently at home in the presence of family this past Wednesday evening June 13th. A battle of more than 3 years with colon cancer took her life, but not her spirit. Janice was always busy because something needed doing. A little impatient, and if you were around her she would quickly enlist you in whatever needed doing as well. The 12th child of 15 children born to George Albertson and Bertha (Hanna) Albertson may be a reason why. Born in Forest City, IA November 1st 1932 she lived 79 years, 7 months, 13 days. As a child she enjoyed playing “Red Light” and “Captain Midnight” and many other such (outside) games with her siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She loved to run. At the age of 11 years she was deeply affected by the untimely death of her mother. Then in July 30, 1949 Janice married Duane K Broome of Britt, IA. They took up residence in Clear Lake, IA. Adding 3 children along the way; Wayne, Debra, and Colleen. Janice later divorced and moved to Mason City where she worked at The Top Hat, Three Sisters and Piper Jaffray. But she most enjoyed her job as a driver for Purolator Courier Service. When they closed she took up delivering Winnebago motor homes for a time. She also worked at Fieldstone Cabinets in Northwood, and The Hanford Inn.  Her last job was working for the Petersen Family of Nora Springs.  While traveling to Florida to see her longtime friend Marilyn, and Disney World, she gave her granddaughter Cassie Jo, some scary driving lessons. She was also known to sneak out to Vegas to spend time with her daughter, and granddaughters, but mostly for the slots!  Most of her local slot time though she was accompanied by her dear friend Paula. Janice was well known as a good basketball referee critic. She was also known for her bargain hunting, cooking (especially her pies). As a good Norwegian Janice felt the need to master crafts of various kinds so she could keep up with the many talents of her older sisters. Janice is survived by her children: Wayne (Julie) Broome of Mason City, Debra Broome of Staten Island NY.  brother: George Elbert Albertson, Garner. sisters: Helen Tharon Steinmetz, Forest City, and Anna Mae Taylor, Mason City.  Grandchildren: Tammy (Andy) Christensen, Jamie (Steve) Case, Cassie Jo (Matt) Wagner, Shane (Shanna) Askildson, Cymbria (Jason) Proceszyn, Tessa Billick. Great Grandchildren: Sheyanne, Breyden, Alexa, Kimberlyn, Aiden, Brennan, Kellen, and 2 buns in the oven.  Friends: Betty Lou Nelson, Britt. Marilyn Olsen, Ormond Beach FL.  Irene Keeper, Mason City, Beth Parcher and Gladys Brallier Nora Springs, and Paula Bishop Mason City. And many Cousins, Nieces and Nephews.

Preceding Janice in death: Her parents George E Albertson and Bertha (Hanna) Albertson, Daughter: Colleen, Brother: Harry Merle, James, Donald, Herbert, and Marlyn (Buddy). Sisters: Juanita Lorraine Pletcher, Anita Marjorie Ellefson, Doris Mylinda, Doris Elaine Gunderson, Lois Ione Hanna, Mardelle Jeanette. She was a good girl!
