Iowa man detained after high-speed vehicle chase

William Smith, The Hawk Eye, Burlington, Iowa –

SALEM – A Washington, Iowa, man led police on a high-speed chase that reached speeds of more than 100 mph early Saturday.

Miguel Andrade, 19, fled from a Henry County Sheriff’s deputy when the officer tried to stop him for speeding about 12:50 a.m. Saturday. Andrade was driving a 2003 Lincoln LS with a 19-year-old man, traveling south in the 2900 block of U.S. 218.

Andrade turned west onto Salem Road and continued to flee at a speed exceeding 100 mph. Another deputy, who already was in Salem, deployed stop-sticks on the 400 block of East Jackson Street, which flattened three of the Andrade’s four tires.

Andrade continued through Salem, however, leaving the community toward Hillsboro. The vehicle’s front tires eventually shredded and came off the rims, making it difficult for Andrade to maintain control of the vehicle. He finally yielded to emergency vehicles at Salem Road and Dakota Avenue.

Andrade was arrested for speeding, eluding police, reckless driving, stop sign violation, possession of alcohol under the legal age and first offense drunken-driving.

Andrade’s passenger, Patrick Antonio Simmons, also of Washington, was arrested for possession of alcohol under the legal age, which was his second offense. Both men were taken to the Henry County Jail.

No was injured during the pursuit.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol and the Van Buren County’s Sheriff’s office.
