Grundy County Deputy Clerk of Court Arrested for Forgery, Perjury

Brigitte Van Nice
SUBJECT IS INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY

Grundy County, IOWA — Wednesday, October 17, 2012, agents with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation arrested 42 year old Brigitte Van Nice, of Grundy Center, Iowa.  The Grundy County Deputy Clerk of Court is being charged with two counts of Forgery and one count of Perjury.  All charges are Class D Felonies.

Court records indicate that Van Nice falsified information on a public record in order to legalize a marriage that did not take place.  Two men from Florida contacted Van Nice in late 2011 and continued to communicate with her into early 2012.  The couple explained they wanted to take advantage of Iowa’s legalization of same sex marriage.  Despite the Floridians’ inability to travel to Iowa, Van Nice filed a marriage license indicating the two were married on February 14, 2012 in Waterloo, Iowa.

Complaint and Affidavit

Van Nice was booked into the Grundy County jail at approximately 11:00 AM on Wednesday.  She posted bond and was released.  Van Nice was given an initial appearance date of October 22, 2012.

In an effort to avoid any perceived conflict of interest, the Grundy County Attorney’s Office will be referring this matter to the Marshall County Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

Upon her arrest, Van Nice was placed on paid administrative leave from the Grundy County Clerk’s Office.
