MASON CITY – Three individuals were arrested and booked after a “sex offense” incident at the Mason City YMCA, 1840 South Monroe Avenue, at about 9 AM Wednesday morning.
Those arrested were: Douglas Howard Petersen, 67; Dennis Clarence Vrba, 68; and David Vaughn Escher, 55.
The three men involved were booked into the Cerro Gordo County Jail.
Mason City police confirmed Thursday morning that all three men were arrested and charged with indecent exposure, a serious misdemeanor.

I think this may go deeper than just the Y. It could go back years with two of them. Dave Escher was Dennis Vrba’s student in High School. I have heard for years that the YMCA is a hotbed of this type of behavior. But, because the big donors keep the place going, they choose to turn a blind eye. WEll, they may pay a big price for that now. Because of this, I have never given to the annual campaign. I beleive in their mission statement, but they do not live up to that standard. There are plenty other non-profits that need our money.

Young kids can enter the male and female locker rooms without an adult, as proven with high school wrestlers “steaming off weight” Y rules are no one under age of 18 allowed in the locker rooms without an adult, yet the H.S. wrestling jocks have full access to this area.
And what about the 2 YMCA employees that were caught engaging in a sex act upstairs in one of the office rooms? Nothing done about that.
There are family shower rooms available for Dads and their young children or Moms with their young children. YMCA – why do you allow Dads to bring their little girls into the male locker room , or Moms bring their little boys into the female locker room?
There is indecent exposure all around at the YMCA as no rules are enforced. And what about all the theft issues in the locker rooms? Theft is rampant at the YMCA and convicted thieves are allowed to room about freely and also go there free of charge or at minimal fee!

Several people reported seeing one of them doing naked jumping jacks in front of people making them uncomfortable. I first heard that many years ago. Does anyone think that is normal? Do you guys defending him think that is okay because you might want to do some soul searching yourself.
I worked at the YMCA for many years—I’m not writing this to trash the Y because I always enjoyed working there, enjoyed using the facility to work out and worked with many great people.
I am female so I’ve never been in the men’s locker room (during regular hours), but know that Dave Escher works out in the steam room and yes he does jumping jacks naked (this is common knowledge around the Y). It is a rule at the Y that you cannot workout in the steam room, however Dave has worked out in the steam room for years and nobody has done anything about it.
Someone should have but the kibosh on this years ago and maybe this wouldn’t have happened.

Why should they be left alone? There was an investigation, they have been charged with indecent exposure. I’m not sure what to think about this. The only one of the three men I know is Dave, and I’ve always thought him to be a good man, a good husband, a good father, and an asset to our community. I would never put him down because of his sexual preferences. However, IF THESE ACCUSATIONS ARE TRUE, he made a serious error in judgment by not taking these activities to a private venue where they wouldn’t be seen by children or anyone else who could be offended.
I’m leaning toward letting this entire incident just fade away. Maybe even drop all charges. Does anyone doubt that these men have learned a huge lesson? And I don’t even want to get started on what this has done to their families.

I have been gone for Iowa for 27 years. I know all three of these men. This story saddens me deeply, but as a former active attorney who was in court every day for twelve years, I learned to withhold judgment. These men are innocent until proven guilty, and what they did, or did not do, has yet to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Many times when I handled defense cases I had clients that looked guilty on paper, but were in fact innocent. I am not defending anything these men may have done in a public place; nor am I trying to justify it (there would be no justification). But I wasn’t there, and so I do not have firsthand knowledge of what, exactly, transpired.
These men have families, friends, businesses, etc., and until all the facts come out and they are proven guilty, or plead guilty, I will withhold judgment and hope this is a very tragic mistake.
And so if they weren’t “UPSTANDING CITIZENS” of the community? What then would be your opinion of them? Seems to me that PROFILING can work both ways.

Well, I could care less if they are gay or not. If they are, you won’t hear me chastise them for it. I am about as far away from gay as they come. I have no fear of gays and no curiosity. I have partied with a group of friends before and a couple of “their” friends happened to be gay and joined our group for a time. I can tell you I have never laughed so hard. Not AT them, WITH them. Gay dudes are some of the funniest people I have ever encountered. We have one gay guy at work and he’s the same way. My only issue is if they were making out in public. That would bother me. Why? Because I’m a hypocrite. If there were two chicks making out in public the same way…I’d be incredibly turned on by that. I venture to guess a lot of guys on here would be too. AND the same guys would think these 3 are dirty old fags. Maybe they are….but why should it really bother US? Trust me, I’m sure they are paying the price for their actions, think of the public humility they have now not to mention the legal issues. Why isn’t that punishment enough for you? There was a miniseries on Showtime that was called ‘Queer as Folk’. It showcases the lives of homosexuals and lesbians in the Pittsburgh area and what they go through living life gay. I recommend people watch it. It gives an excellent perspective from their viewpoint in a very realistic and heartfelt way. It is a drama, with excellent actors and real life situations. I know it helped me open up my mind on the issue of what it means to be gay in America. I’m heterosexual by the way…and no I’m not even gay curious. But I am curious in understanding people who are oppressed and demeaned in society. Yes I grew up with all the same alliterations as everyone else…peter pumper, fudge packer, fag hag. And homosexuals made me squeamish too especially when they came on to me. But, at some point, you have to get over that. You have to realize this is what it’s like when biology doesn’t operate in the normal reproductive oriented manner. It’s strange that a male would be attracted to a male, but it does occur, and because it does, it should be understood and protected. If Dick Cheney’s daughter wasn’t gay I would possibly believe the conservative argument, but Lynn Cheney grew up in perhaps the most conservative household in America and she is biologically gay. So let’s start dealing with this reality and stop persecuting gays. So now you have your assignment: Go find and watch Queer as Folk episodes, and open your mind a bit.

For this television does have a place in society…obviously. Should a person need to go to AFghanistan to learn about war first hand or is it not possible to watch Restrepo and at least gain a perspective of what they are going through? I think your statement is a bit ridiculous, as I’m sure you use media all the time to form your view of the world. In fact you’re using media right now as you write. Btw, I have been to gay nightclubs in Iowa City, I do have a few gay acquaintances, and I’ve been hit on by gay people at the YMCA even…so I’ve experienced it first hand as well…and I can tell you that Queer as Folk is a good starting point for squeamish people to safely gain entrance into the gay lifestyle and perspective from the safety of their own homes. You say your intel has reported that this behavior has been going on for awhile. If this was talked about in the locker room, why didn’t someone go to the Y administration with those concerns? In this day and age it would have been very easy for law enforcement to put some high-tech secret surveillance gear in the sauna or showers (or wherever this happened) and this would have been caught much earlier. An absolute shame that a parent and child would walk in on this.
Questions were raised after the Sandusky scandal broke as to how so many good people could know about his behavior and yet do nothing – or, in McQueary’s case, actually witness the act and do nothing. If there was some suspicion that something was going on, it should have been reported.
It’s been years since I was a member at the Y and I’ve forgotten the layout of the men’s locker room. Wouldn’t somebody have to act as a lookout for this behavior to take place? Don’t people walk by the sauna on their way to the showers?

Mr Vrba taught HS science in the late 70’s at MCHS, and at some point went to teach at NIACC. Mr. Petersen taught HS French and pottery in the late 70’s early 80’s at MCHS. These men were teachers once, and have should have known better then this. Especially in light of the Jerry Sandusky trial. They are entitled to do what they wish in private as long as all parties are agreeable. This was not private, but a VERY public place, and against the law because of the public place they chose. With that being said, they have likely ruined their reputations, and the fallout will affect their families. Very sad for the families.
If I did the math correctly, when Escher was 16, the older two would have been in their late 20’s. Were they teaching here then, and was Escher a former student? Not that it matters, just wondering.
What does the Sandusky trial have to do with this? Nothing. These are all consenting adults. It’s possible for someone to be a homosexual and not be a pedophile. The fact that they were in a public place is the bad part here.
These men chose a poor time to make a bad choice. Could care less if they are gay or not. Because of the Sandusky trial, people are more sensitive to situations of public sexual expressions whether they agree or not. Partly because of where it was supposedly done. And yes, I suppose Dave could’ve been a former student of their’s, but doubt that has little to do with this. Bottom line, they made some very poor choice’s, not my job to judge but to hope justice is done, and help is rendered as needed.

Am I reading the report correctly that the incident actually happened on 7/20 and they weren’t arrested until 8/1? That would imply an investigation was performed and the arrests were the result. The article seems to imply the whole thing happened at 9am Wednesday. Just curious.

When i was a member of the y there where always old men naked for an overly long time in the locker room walking around. it was gross and strange but noone called the cops these three had to be doing something more to have the cops called. also naked men don’t push each other around playfully thats creepy

I was surprised when my husband told me there were no curtains on the shower stalls in the men’s locker room at the Y. Now it makes perfect sense. Men cannot be trusted to be alone with each other. Ick!!!

Wow….talk about another case of bad journalism by North Iowa Today….these men were not arrested, not taken to jail, just charged with indecent exposure for horsing around in the steam room after one of them slipped and fell and bumped the other guys and they made a joke out of it by pushing each other around. Someone walking by took offense to it and this is why it had to be made public to the police. Doesn’t make sense to me, people are supposed to be naked in the locker room and guys horse around all of the time. Seems like a clear cut case of wrong place wrong time and someone that is too sensitive took offense to it. Can’t get away with anything these days without offending someone. People are just too damn senstive.
