DES MOINES — About 120 Iowa National Guard soldiers will deploy to Washington, D.C., this July as the nation’s capital prepares for massive crowds, heightened security and America’s 250th anniversary celebration.

Gov. Kim Reynolds announced the deployment, saying Iowa soldiers will support public safety, infrastructure and planning efforts as millions of visitors are expected in Washington during the semiquincentennial celebration of the United States.

The Iowa soldiers will operate under Title 32, 502(f) status during a six-month mobilization, working with the District of Columbia National Guard and other personnel from across the country.

Their primary duties are expected to include security support, traffic and crowd management, logistics, communications and transportation assistance.

“This mission reflects the continued professionalism, readiness, and versatility of the Iowa National Guard,” Reynolds said. “Whether supporting communities here at home, responding overseas, or assisting in our nation’s capital during a historic milestone for our country, Iowa’s Soldiers and Airmen continue to answer the call with excellence.”

The deployment comes as President Donald Trump’s administration continues a broader push to clean up Washington, D.C., crack down on crime and prepare the capital for one of the largest national celebration periods in American history.

Trump declared a crime emergency in Washington, D.C., in 2025, arguing that violence, disorder and unsafe conditions in the nation’s capital demanded a stronger federal response. Since then, federal officials have moved to increase the presence of National Guard troops and federal law enforcement in the city, including support from agencies such as the U.S. Park Police, U.S. Marshals Service and other federal partners.

The effort has been framed by the administration as both a public-safety campaign and a beautification push ahead of America250, with the goal of making Washington safer, cleaner and more welcoming for visitors arriving from across the country.

Public crime data from Washington, D.C., show that several major crime categories have fallen year-over-year in 2026, including homicides, robberies, burglaries, motor vehicle thefts and overall reported crime. However, assaults with a dangerous weapon have increased compared to the same point in 2025, underscoring the continued security concerns facing the city.

The Iowa troops will support agencies including the U.S. Park Police, the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service.

Maj. Gen. Stephen Osborn, Adjutant General of the Iowa National Guard, said the mission gives Iowa soldiers a role in a historic national event.

“This is an opportunity for Iowa Soldiers to support a mission of national significance during the lead-up to America250 celebrations,” Osborn said. “Our Soldiers are trained, prepared, and proud to represent the State of Iowa while supporting operations that help ensure the nation’s capital remains safe, organized, and ready to welcome Americans from across the country.”

The deployment also highlights the National Guard’s role in large-scale public events, where military personnel can be called on to help local, state and federal agencies manage crowds, secure public spaces and support transportation and communications needs.

America’s 250th anniversary will be celebrated on July 4, 2026, marking 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Additional details on the Iowa units involved, deployment timelines and sendoff opportunities are expected to be announced later.

I imagine when he does leave office, there will be a big parties everywhere. Hopefully, soon.

“However, assaults with a dangerous weapon have increased compared to the same point in 2025, underscoring the continued security concerns facing the city.”

How can this be true? Trump has said he wiped out crime in DC.

Imagine what it will be like when he leaves office.
