Dan Rish, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2025 at the age of 63 surrounded by his family.
Born on January 19, 1962, to Harold and Yota (Dragonas) Rish, Dan was a lifelong resident of Northern Iowa and Southern Minnesota.
From the moment he picked up his first instrument at age 9, music became Dan’s true calling. What started as a childhood passion would evolve into a lifelong pursuit, shaping not only his career but his very identity. At the age of 12 he went on his first tour with a group of adult musicians. Dan was a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and teacher who dedicated his life to both creating and sharing the magic of music. Over the years, he wrote countless songs, recorded several albums, and mentored aspiring musicians, passing on his knowledge and love for music to anyone willing to listen.
Dan’s pride in his Greek heritage was evident in everything he did, whether it was through his cooking, storytelling, or simply the warmth he brought into every room. He had an innate gift for making people feel seen and heard, always knowing when someone needed a kind word or a moment to chat. His family meant the world to him, and he took great joy in passing his passion for music down to his three children. His role as a father and grandfather was one of his greatest accomplishments, and he was known as the best dad, always nonjudgmental and full of love.
Beyond his musical talents, Dan was an avid outdoorsman, finding peace in fishing, camping, and enjoying nature. But perhaps his most treasured companion in his later years was his mini Aussie, Whiley, whose loyalty and affection brought Dan immeasurable joy.
Affectionately known as “Lord of the Strings,” one of Dan’s dreams was to be inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a dream he will see fulfilled posthumously, as he and the band, Witchazel, will be inducted during the Labor Day weekend ceremony. It’s a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated so much of himself to his craft, his community, and his family.
Dan is survived by his three children, four grandchildren, significant other, and many close friends who will forever cherish the memories they have of him.
He will be deeply missed, but his music, his love for others, and his unwavering kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Yota Rish; and his brother, Jim Rish.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, August 2, at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 1311 2nd St SW, Mason City with Fr. Nichalas March presiding. Burial will follow in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to Dan’s service at the church on Saturday.
Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Dan’s honor in care of his family.
