Terry J. Leyh, 57, of Sumner, died Thursday, May 8, 2025, surrounded by his family at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Methodist Campus in Rochester, Minnesota, following a brief battle with lymphoma.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, May 16, 2025, at Faith Evangelical Church in Sumner with Rev. Brian Boehmler officiating. The service will be livestreamed on the Church’s Facebook Page. Inurnment will follow at Wilson Grove Cemetery, rural Sumner. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Thursday, May 15th at Faith Evangelical Church and for one hour preceding services at the Church on Friday. Memorials may be made to the family for later designation.
Terry James, son of Orval and Pauline (Limkemann) Leyh was born December 7, 1967, in Oelwein, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Union Methodist Church, rural Sumner. Terry received his education in the Sumner schools and graduated from Sumner High School in 1986. Following graduation, he served in the United States Army, completing his basic training at Fort Jackson and was stationed at Fort Riley, prior to being honorably discharged in 1988. Terry returned to the Sumner area and completed his educational journey, earning a degree in Electrical Engineering from Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo. On June 24, 1989, he was united in marriage with Christine Lalk at the First Baptist Church in Sumner. To this union two children were born, Josh and Josie. The couple lived on the Lalk family farm, near Hawkeye for a couple of years, prior to returning to Sumner in 1991. Terry began his professional career in I.T. at G.M.A.C., working there for twenty five years and continued his work in I.T. at Northeast Security Bank for the past ten plus years. He was a member of Faith Evangelical Church in Sumner for over thirty years. Terry enjoyed rides on his Harley Davidson and was a Kansas City Chiefs superfan. He thoroughly cherished the time he spent with his family and his greatest joy was doing things that brought joy to them.
Terry is survived by his wife, Christy of Sumner; two children, Josh (Emily) Leyh of Ft. Madison and Josie (Zack) Forstie of Boone; two grandsons, Jackson and Evan Leyh; parents, Pauline and Orval Leyh of Sumner; siblings, Leesa Janssen of Kassen, Minnesota, Jeff (Lisa) Leyh of Sumner and Dawn (Dr. Matt) Olmstead of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; sister-in-law, Donna (Scott) Kee of Bourbonnais, Illinois; brother-in-law, Dennis (Gail) Lalk of Morristown, New Jersey; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
In addition to his maternal and paternal grandparents; he was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John Lalk in 2001 and Marva Lalk in 2020; and his aunts and uncles.
