Terry Lee VanHorn, age 71, of Mason City, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, February 1, 2025.

Per Terry’s wishes, he will be cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Terry was born on September 20, 1953, in Mason City to Lloyd and Margaret “Opkis” VanHorn. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1972, then began working alongside his dad and twin brother, Larry, at VanHorn Auto Parts until retirement. On October 18, 1974, Terry was united in marriage to the love of his life, Susan “Sue” in Mason City. The couple shared over 50 (mostly) wonderful years together. Terry was an adventurous person and always kept Sue on her toes. He was notorious for asking Sue for a hand when working on projects that ended up taking much longer than the 5 minutes he promised. Terry was full of ideas along with being stubborn and uncontrollable, but with a big heart. He had a large circle of friends who were willing (cautiously) to help him with difficult and sometimes ill-advised projects. In this process a few trips to the ER were necessary along with numerous rescues. Hilarity ensued…

After his retirement, Terry worked on his life-long dream of building his cabin. He loved the outdoors; especially going hunting and fishing. He enjoyed mowing and tearing through the woods on his John Deere. Terry knew how to keep himself busy and mostly out of trouble with his long list of never-ending projects. He was a woodworker and made bird feeders, benches and tables; as well as other items he was asked to build. Terry’s most treasured moments were with his granddaughter Zoey and his family out at the cabin fishing, shooting and chain saws roaring or just spending time together. Terry will be missed dearly by his family and friends.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sue VanHorn; son, Gary (Heidi) VanHorn; granddaughter, Zoey VanHorn; father, Lloyd VanHorn; sisters, Connie (Bob) Zinnel and Vicki Eckman and many other extended family members and friends.

He was reunited in heaven with his mother, Margaret VanHorn; twin brother, Larry VanHorn and brother-in-law, Geno Eckman.
