Three dead, three hurt in head-on Worth county collision on I-35

WORTH COUNTY, IOWA - An elderly Florida driver rolling the wrong direction on Interstate 35 in Worth county slammed head-on into an Iowa driver, killing three people Saturday morning.

WORTH COUNTY, IOWA – An elderly Florida driver rolling the wrong direction on Interstate 35 in Worth county slammed head-on into an Iowa driver, killing three people Saturday morning.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident took place Saturday, December 28, 2024. At 8:55 AM, a 2014 Volkswagon EOS driven by 83-year-old Leonard Lilyholm of Palm Beach, Florida, crossed the median and was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 near the 204 mile marker in Worth county. At this location, the Volkswagon collided head-on into a 2013 Chevy Silverado driven by 41-year-old Bradley Vonnahme of Coon Rapids, Iowa.

As a result of the collision, Lilyholm and a passenger, 82-year-old Carol Lilyholm, were killed. Also killed was Bradley Vonnahme. Hurt were three persons: 6-year-old Brookes Vonnahme, 26-year-old Saul Huntley-Ayala of Ames and 24-year-old Voctor Santos of Ames. They were all taken to Mercy One Hospital in Mason City.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted in the incident by Forest City Ambulance, Northwood Ambulance, Iowa DOT, Iowa DNR, Worth county sheriff’s office and the Fertile and Hanlontown fire departments.
