Dennis “Denny” “Poppy” Michael Uker, age 78, of Britt, IA passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center surrounded by his family.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. with a one-hour prior visitation on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at Britt Evangelical Free Church, 810 2nd Ave NW, Britt, IA with Pastor Steve Couch officiating. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.
Denny was born on March 4, 1946, in Charles City, IA to Carl and Wava (Laudner) Uker. He attended school and graduated from Rockford High School in 1964. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served active duty from 1964-1968- and two-years reserve until being honorably discharged. On July 1, 1967, Denny was united in marriage to the love of his life, Vivian (Shoemake) in Hartsville, South Carolina. To their union, one daughter, Erin, was born.
Denny and Vivian resided in Charleston, SC when they were first married. They also lived in Ham Lake, MN; Kansas City, KS; Osage, IA; Norwalk, IA; Sheffield, IA and most recently Britt, IA for the last 6 years. Denny and Vivian moved to Britt to be closer to their daughter and her family, especially his granddaughter, Addie, aka “Peanut.” Addie was the light of Denny’s life, and he absolutely loved spending time with her and being her “Poppy.”
Denny started his career in Information Technologies with Sperry Univac in Roseville, MN which later became Unisys in Clear Lake, IA for 25 years until they closed. For the last 13 years of his professional career, he worked at Team Quest in Clear Lake until retirement in 2013.
Denny’s hobbies included: woodworking, gardening and mowing the lawn. He loved building things with his hands and the outdoors. Denny was a laid back, quiet kind of guy. He had the biggest giving heart and always wanted to help those in need. Denny’s family meant the world to him, and he loved spending time with them.
Denny was a member of the Britt Evangelical Free Church. He loved Jesus and his faith was very important to him. We are comforted in knowing that Denny has gone home to be with the Lord, and we will see him again one day.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 57 years, Vivian Uker; daughter, Erin (CJ) Kammrad; granddaughter, Addie “Peanut” Kammrad all of Britt. His nieces: Jennifer (Jamie) Sliger, Stephanie (John) Paulus and Rachel (Brent) Waid; and “adopted” daughter, Amy Ewert; several great nieces and nephews. Sister-in-law, Elaine (Co) Hungerpiller of Hartsville, SC.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
