OBIT: Marilyn J. Popinga

Marilyn J. Popinga, 80, of Mason City, passed away Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at her home in Mason City.

In keeping with Marilyn’s wishes, cremation will take place and inurnment will be held at a future date in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

The daughter of Lafe and Etta (Myer) Cecil, Marilyn Jean was born on June 17, 1941 in Keokuk, Iowa. She grew up in the Keokuk area and attended school in Missouri.

On December 23,1978 she was united in marriage to James Popinga in Plymouth, Iowa. Together they would be blessed with six children and 26 years of marriage.

For many years Marilyn stayed at home as a home maker where she raised their children and tended to their home. In her free time she loved time spent on the front porch, gardening and canning vegetables and was an amazing cook and baker. She enjoyed having family gather over the holidays and preparing meals for all to enjoy.

In earlier years she and Jim enjoyed golfing at Highland Park Golf Course in Mason City, playing cards and Yahtzee, and their annual trip to the Mississippi River to enjoy the fall colors. She also served as a volunteer for Crisis Intervention in Mason City for a number of years in the 1980’s.

Marilyn loved being a wife, mother, and eventually a grandmother. She cherished the time spent together as family and spent countless hours with her grandchildren, especially during their younger years.

She now joins her husband, Jim, together again in Heaven.
