WASHINGTON, D.C. – She called the 911 attacks a hoax, school shootings staged, shouted at folks in the halls of Congress, and showed support for deadly violence against Democratic colleagues – now, newly-elected Republican U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia has been punished for her behavior.
The vote was 230-199 in the House of Representatives Thursday night, with 11 Republicans joining the Democrats in ousting Greene from her posts on the Education / Labor committee and the Budget committee. The move to strip committee assignments affectively cripples Greene’s ability to represent her tiny piece of Georgia.
The last Representative to be kicked out of committees in Congress was Iowa’s Steve King, also for egregious behavior, two years ago. He claimed the divisive, hateful, racist remarks he had been making for years that got him in trouble were all a big misunderstanding as he was booted. Greene remained defiant on Twitter in the days leading up to her punishment. But just prior to the vote, Greene tried the same tactic King tried, telling fellow lawmakers before the vote was taken she no longer believed in some of the “Qanon” conspiracies she long supported. Showing rare contrition, Greene – a die-hard Donald Trump loyalist – now claims the 911 attacks really happened and school shootings actually did happen. She claimed, despite videos of her spewing radical behaviors, that folks only knew her through the lens of skewed mainstream media.
Republicans say Democrats opened a can of worms that they will now turn on the lefties when and if the GOP regains the upper hand in the House. Some of Greene’s GOP colleagues are already trying to get her back on committees.
