Iowa man guilty of Eagle Grove arson fire, gets 25 years in prison

EAGLE GROVE, Iowa – A Sioux City man is guilty of setting a house on fire in Wright County and has been sentenced to prison.

Luis Antonio Huerta-Valdez, age 21, was charged with first-degree arson. The Eagle Grove Police Department says he intentionally set fire to a house in the 1000 block of South Commercial Avenue.

Firefighters responded to the blaze around 1:12 AM Tuesday, August 9. When police arrived, they helped people inside the home as they jumped from second story windows. 11 people, including two police officers and one firefighter, were transported to surrounding hospitals for treatment of injuries ranging from smoke inhalation to severe burns.

The Eagle Grove Police Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigated the incident. The Goldfield Fire Department helped at the scene, as well.

Huerta-Valdez entered a not-guilty plea initially but then pled guilty this week before he faced a jury. He was immediately sentenced to 25 years in prison and has already been sent away.
