Man dead after trading shots with Northeast Iowa police officer Tuesday morning

MAQUOKETA, IOWA – An Iowa police officer was shot Tuesday morning as he conducted a traffic stop.

At approximately 2:51 AM on April 1, 2014, A Maquoketa Police Officer stopped to check on a blue, 2005 Dodge Ram pickup truck that was sitting in the 200 block of West Grove Street. The officer approached the vehicle, saw the driver with a weapon, they exchanged gunfire and the Maquoketa officer was shot. The injuries he sustained are not life threatening. Several rounds also struck the Maquoketa Police car. The name of the officer is being withheld at this time. The officer will be on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The driver fled the scene and other Maquoketa Police Officers were able to locate the vehicle and pursued it. The pursuit went south out of Maquoketa and the vehicle was lost in the area of Elwood in Clinton County.

A short time later, the vehicle was located on 150th Ave., just north of Highway 136 in Clinton County. The vehicle had been involved in a rollover accident and the driver was deceased in the vehicle.The driver has now been identified as Aaron Edward Scott, age 30. It has been confirmed that Scott is the individual who was involved in the shooting earlier in Maquoketa. An autopsy will be conducted on Wednesday, April 2nd, at the Office of the Iowa State Medical Examiner in Ankeny, Iowa. The manner and cause of death will be released following the autopsy.
