Iowa opens NCAA Tournament with overtime win over Temple, 72-70

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – For the second year in a row, Iowa opened the NCAA Tournament with a victory as the Hawkeyes beat Temple, 72-70.

The seventh-seeded University of Iowa men’s basketball team defeated 12th-seeded Temple in overtime, 72-70, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Friday. Iowa will play second-seeded Villanova on Sunday at a time yet to be determined.

Iowa has now won at least one NCAA Tournament game in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1996 and 1997.

Today’s buzzer beater victory is Iowa’s first since Nov. 30, 2008 at the Las Vegas Invitational against Kansas State (Cyrus Tate)

The Hawkeyes matched their season-low in turnovers in today’s victory with three (Drake, Dec. 19).

Jarrod Uthoff led Iowa with 23 points. Uthoff has scored 20 or more points 16 times this season and in three straight games.

Anthony Clemmons led Iowa with six assists. He added six points and five rebounds.

Iowa will play #2 seed Villanova on Sunday with a shot at the Sweet 16 on the line.
