Move of Egloff house postponed again, power off for neighbors (photos)

MASON CITY – The Egloff house might finally get moved this week after a number of setbacks.

According to the Egloff House social media site, the move is scheduled to start between 7 and 8 AM today, but the house hasn’t moved an inch. FEMA is on the site, and trees are being trimmed to facilitate the move to the Carolina Avenue bridge.

NIT has been informed that some folks nearby the Egloff House site at 7th Street NE have lost power, and to make up for it, they have been given “coffee vouchers or half-off meals”.

Rain is going to be an impediment to this move, and it’s in the forecast.

“Rain is in the forecast and significant rain on the bridge could require that the move be pushed back to later in the week,” the social media page said.

The City of Mason City purchased the Egloff House – located at 655 7th Street NE – after the 2008 flood and since then has sought to relocate it out of the flood plain. Its new location will be in the 300 block of East State Street, part of the so-called Cultural Crescent. The house was split in two for the move. Ownership of both halves of the house has transferred from the City of Mason City to Community Benefit Mason City (CBMC). The City will continue to be involved in the logistics of the project, but responsibility for the management of the houses and the move is now with CBMC.

A “bridge over a bridge” has been set on the North Carolina Avenue bridge, which the house pieces must navigate to get to its new home (see photos, below).

Officials say street closures will continue until the house gets to its final resting place.

“With the exception of the Carolina Bridge, there will be a rolling road closure as the house makes its way to its new home on State St. We anticipate it will take about a week to remove the bridge assembly from the Carolina Bridge. State St. will be closed between Georgia and Connecticut for up to 2 weeks while the two pieces of the house are moved over the footings.”

Did General Grant really use the toilet in this house ?

What a waste of private sector taxpayer money.

Private sector taxpayer money? Explain that please.

If I was one of the residents that have no power, I would have insisted on a hotel room and free meals, not half price vouchers.

No one is without power. Alliant thinks they will be able to lift power lines but if a line has to be dropped they will drop it as the house gets to it and then put it back up right away.

The two pieces of the house were moved about a block this morning so there’s been a bit of progress.

DOES CITY OWN ALL LOTS ?

The city owns the lots were the house was. Some private group owns the lots where it is going.

Just wondering what the total cost is going to be to get this house set and useable, on east state. By total cost I mean, from the first grandiose idea to save/move it, to man, I’m glad that’s done.

@Allen-It is going to cost a lot. It would have been cheaper to tear it down and build a replica.

LVS-how much less would it have been to build a replica? How much money would they have save by doing this?

How much do you have?

LVS-Just thought you might know the savings. Sorry for asking.

It is pretty much common sense. Look up the cost of the move and set up and then compare it to the value of the home. What really gets me is these houses were there for years and years and never had a water problem except for the one time. When people live by water they accept there might be a problem once every hundred years or so. That is why you buy insurance. If not you lose. That is the way of life.

To answer you question, I have not run all of the cost because they are not done yet. It makes it difficult to figure until all cost are in. But, a hip shot is pretty easy to do.

Just come out and admit that you don’t have any clue.

Now you know why I don’t answer your questions. You are not smart enough to understand anything.

Not quite there,bucko
You don’t answer questions because you pull comments out of your ass and have neither the intelligence nor the facts to ever back them up.
Of course, any intelligence & facts would pretty much disprove everything you spew out.

LVS-These last few comments are not from the same Anonymous that ask you the question.
