MASON CITY – She’s already been paid a hefty salary, now city leaders want to pay a Blue Zones employee tens of thousands of dollars more.
The city is strapped for cash, has even had trouble staffing its public pool (which has a broken heater), but apparently has found over $20,000 to pay part-time Blue Zones contracted employee Angela Determan.
Determan – who you may occasionally see tooling around the Cultural Crescent in a shiny convertible – has already been paid $53,153.25 per year on a contract basis for a “part-time position” in conducting the city’s Blue Zone initiative.
According to city documents, Determan has worked 563.25 extra hours on the Blue Zone and other “volunteer” efforts. City administrator Brent Trout wants to pay her an extra $21,803.21 for her “Additional services to meet the workload” of these projects.
The cash flow to the Blue Zones doesn’t stop there.
Trout wants to hire a part-time contract worker for 1040 hours at $20.00 an hour to keep working on the Blue Zones.
