MASON CITY — Jim Wardlaw, a 21-year Marine Corps veteran, former Cedar Falls business owner and devoted family man, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City. He was 89 and was surrounded by his family.
Cremation has taken place according to Jim’s wishes. No services are planned at this time. Memorials may be directed to his family.
Born Aug. 11, 1936, in Oconee County, South Carolina, Jim was a son of Clifford and Amanda (Cobb) Wardlaw. He grew up in South Carolina and spent much of his childhood with his siblings under the care of his Uncle Joe and Aunt Hattie.
At age 17, Jim enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, beginning a military career that would span 21 years. A Vietnam War veteran, he served at duty stations around the world before retiring from the Marines in 1974 while stationed in Waterloo.
Jim married Rebecca “Becky” Roque in 1958 in Quantico, Virginia. Their military travels became part of their family story: daughter Pauline was born in Virginia, son Clifford in Colorado and sons Robert and John in Panama. After Jim’s retirement from military service, the family made its home in Waverly.
Ready for a new chapter, Jim studied heating and air conditioning at Hawkeye Technical College. He worked as an appliance repair technician for Landmark Appliance before opening Cedar Falls Appliance Center. He later sold the business and retired for a second time.
Retirement brought Jim and Becky more opportunities to travel, play golf and enjoy time with their children and grandchildren. Jim especially treasured playing golf with his sons and later passed his knowledge and love of the game to his grandchildren.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Jim remained a loyal supporter of Clemson University and the Detroit Tigers. He also enjoyed taking walks with Becky, whose companionship remained central to his life.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Becky, and sons Clifford and John.
His family expressed gratitude to the staffs of Good Shepherd Health Center, St. Croix Hospice and the Mason City VA Clinic for the care and comfort they provided during Jim’s final days. They also offered special thanks to Ashley and the staff of Cornerstone Assisted Living for their friendship and dedicated care.
