Indiana man killed on Iowa interstate highway

logo-iowa-state-patrolIOWA CITY – An Indiana man lost control of his vehicle and struck an overpass, claiming his life.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2011 Freightliner semi was traveling westbound on Interstate 80 near the 244 mile marker Friday morning, May 22 at about 8:11 AM when the truck drifted right off the shoulder and struck an overpass. The semi then came to rest back on the interstate, where it started on fire.

Emergency responders arrived, and both occupants of the vehicle were transported to University of Iowa hospitals. Injured was the driver, 24-year-old Shawn Freeman of Plattsmouth, Nebraska. He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Gary A. Griffey, age 39, was killed in the accident, and was not wearing a seat belt.

The accident remains under investigation.
