Grant awarded to group working to improve Mason City park

murphy-parkMASON CITY – The Mason City Clinic Charitable Giving Fund has awarded a $500 grant to the Friends of Murphy Park project, the group reported today.

Friends of Murphy Park said this grant will “go a long way in contributing to the purchase of trail material and educational signage for the park.”

Friends of Murphy Park describes their park as a “wooded area on the north bank of the scenic Winnebago River, with entrances on Birch Drive and Illinois Avenue. The park is a mix of dense woodland vegetation and native grasses, boasting a nice bit of peace and quiet in the middle of busy Mason City.

“The park is not very developed and therefore underused by locals. There is a small section off of Birch Drive that is mowed and has a bench. There are wildlife-made trails but these become overgrown in late spring/summer and are hard or impossible to find. There are lots of big branches in the way that would be impossible for bikers to get around or over without difficulty.”

The Friends of Murphy Park describes itself as a “group within the Mason City Jaycees, is working with the Mason City Parks and Recreation department to improve the park with nature-themed walking/biking trails and improved signage.”
