AMES – Law enforcement in Ames conducted safety and law violation checks on party buses recently due to reported incidents of law breaking.

The Ames police department said that the agency along with Iowa State university police and Iowa Motor Vehicle Enforcement Officers conducted checks of party buses in the Ames area, due to reports of binge drinking, underage alcohol consumption and sexual assaults that have taken place in those vehicles. Party buses are commonly used by people for gatherings for “safe” transport between multiple venues – typically bars – so the danger of drunk driving is negated.

Police said that 9 buses and 1 limo were checked during the sweep. Most of the vehicles were empty of partiers during the project. One driver was cited for speeding and a USDOT number violation. One passenger was cited for possession of a controlled substance. One driver was cited for an exhaust violation and the bus was taken out of service.

Also during the sweep, other vehicles were checked and a drunk driver was arrested.

Grant money from the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau was used to held fund the project.

Perhaps Law Enforcement and or Cops, should use different terms other than “CRACKING DOWN” I think people are growing tired od uniformed people with guns “CRACKING DOWN” I think the last couple of weeks have showed that is not always the best solution!!
What ever happened to protect and serve??

What they are really pissed about is that people are finding a way to legally go out and get drunk and evade the dragnet DUI traps that police rely on to arrest people for operating while intoxicated. The Sate is corrupt, and people are finally beginning to realize how bad the police have become over the decades. They want that authoritarian model to rule the minds of citizens. More party buses should be employed, not less. I agree that authoritarian terminology needs to GO.

I always thought they had to have probable cause to search a vehicle or get the drivers permission. I also thought they could not single out a vehicle or type of vehicle, but had to stop every vehicle going down a road and check them all. Seems to be pretty extreme to me.

Ahhh, the party bus, brings back memories, those were the good ole days, gone forever. Except in the rolodex of my mind.

good gracious what nest for the ISU students, cant walk, cant drive, cant ride party buses, are they in college or jail? Guys in prison have less rules then these students
