Clear Lake man sent to prison in eluding case, awaits sentencing on other charges

MASON CITY – A man who fled police last May and was caught and later given probation was sentenced to a prison term last week and awaits sentencing on other charges.

Kenneth Filbrandt, age 30 of Clear Lake, had an original 2 year prison sentence imposed upon him on October 1 by judge Karen Salic in an eluding case.  Filbrandt had previously been given probation after he was caught and arrested by Mason City police on May 5 for eluding.  An officer had attempted to stop Filbrandt’s vehicle at Highway 122 and Crescent Drive that evening, but he refused to stop and turned off the highway at South Polk Avenue. The pursuit was less than one mile in distance and lasted for two and a half minutes. Filbrandt stopped the car in the 1200 block of 9th SW and fled on foot. After a short foot pursuit he was apprehended by officers, arrested, and took a plea deal for probation, fines and a suspended 2 year prison term.

The prison term will be served consecutively to any other prison terms Filbrandt is sentenced to, as he is facing other charges at this time, including a number of felony second degree theft, third degree theft, and other charges from Mason City and Clear Lake police.  He has entered into a plea deal and is awaiting sentencing on November 10.  Filbrant was accused of possession of methamphetamine, second degree burglary and third degree burglary by Clear Lake police.  He was found to be in possession of bikes allegedly stolen from Ragbrai participants and other goods.  Clear Lake police recently seized high end bicycles and bicycle frames from the Silver Boot Motel, where Filbrandt was living when the bikes were stolen.  He also was allegedly involved in burglaries in Clear Lake at various residences, including the Clear Lake Outing Club.  An expensive computer and jewelry were taken from that location.

Filbrandt won’t be transported to prison until he is sentenced for his crimes in the above plea deal.
