MASON CITY – A Mason City sex offender is awaiting an arraignment after an assault in the Cerro Gordo County Jail.
Darrell Wayne Ballard, age 24, allegedly assaulted another inmate at the jail on September 28. He was charged with one count of serious assault and awaits an arraignment hearing on October 13.
Ballard had been arrested on July 29 at the Beje Clark halfway house on an arrest warrant connected to his two convictions for indecent exposure in Cerro Gordo county in 2009 and 2010. Ballard had exposed himself to two females over the age of 18. He had been paroled back in July of 2012 after serving less than 2 years in an Iowa prison.
Ballard is currently jailed and awaiting bed space back at Beje.

After reading these comments I know one thing that mason city is filled with a lot of mean, Cruel and hurtful people.
Yes, it does–plenty of small-towners with correspondingly small minds. Any criminal incident in this low-crime town becomes an excuse to exercise their unearned sense of self-righteousness and victimhood.

Actually, you’re wrong. Most sexual crimes have nothing to do with the desire for sex, it’s all about the power over another human being. I am NOT defending this toolbag’s behavior at all, but this guy didn’t attempt to rape or even assault either of his victims, he just showed them his junk. He’s still a pervert and should be dealt with before his crimes escalate (which I’m sure they will if left unchecked), but castration will do nothing to stop this behavior. Lobotomy however…
Well with the way our judicial system is that’s the easiest place to send them. They know they are learning nothing but better crime activities.
This guy does not belong in Beje. Put him in the big house where he belongs.
So there sending him back to BG after an assault this makes no sense at all. BG is a waste of time for these guys. Just gives them time to figure out when and where to find their next fix and victims.
