Op-ed:
A story in the Globe-Gazette today reported that three incumbents on the Charles City School Board lost their bid for re-election. What does that say? It dispels the notion as an old wives tale that incumbents are hard to beat, in truth they are easy to beat….especially those who have no record of accomplishment during their previous term.
From conversations I have had with two current candidates who are out door knocking…..the comments, while encouraging are not that all surprising. The vast majority, and I emphise the word vast, are very vocal about the incumbent Mayor Eric Bookmeyer and the Second Ward representative Travis Hickey. I found it strange that so many homes in succession were in accordance in their thinking. Neither are well liked by those who intend to vote. They also said each resident was determined to go to the polls to make certain the incumbents were not re-elected. One guy said Hickey never returned his calls….ever. What they said about Bookmeyer cannot be printed….. Janet Solberg also fits this profile.
For example, why would the mayor be called “Little Hitler” more than once by residents?
While the recent comments are interesting and could serve as a mini barometer; they are not conclusive as to any final outcome. To change the political landscape in this city you need to cast a vote.

Larry Loeckly would make a terrific mayor. He is level headed, knows this community inside and out, lived here his whole life, and is well versed in just how things work in city hall.
I would vote for Larry in a heartbeat; I can only wish he’d run.

I have heard that Larrey Loeckle may come out of the woodwork and run. Unfortunately, people have long memories. He was a bigger naysayer on the council than most in recent history. He and Stan Romans were just the worst….

You have drank to much of the Globe Gazettes cool aid if you believe that baloney. I stand proud of my voting record.
By the way, when I got elected I inherited a financial mess and a big pile of rubble know as Southbridge. To many people had their hands in the taxpayer’s cookie jar. Doing the right thing isn’t always easy, or popular. You are probably one of those that I burnt when I caught you with your hand in the cookie jar.

to alter ego, Children is the one with the big mouth and acts like he knows what’s best for MC. Let him run and put his $ where his mouth is. Who writes more against the city council than him. If he knows what’s best, then he owes it to the citizens of MC to run and get rid of them.
NIT said that everyone that they interviewed for the school levies were going to vote no. The people that said they will go out and vote out bookmeyer and the rest of the council will sit at home that day and complain on here. Children, here is your opportunity to run and make a difference in Mason City. Perfect timing. You have your choice of councilman or mayor. Take your pick. Since you despise the current city government holders, let’s hear your ideas and solutions to improve MC instead of the same old negativity. Let the voters choose between you or the ones up for re-election. Let the voters speak.
Why don’t you run, big mouth?
Why would anyone in MC want to run for mayor or council unless they are supported by NIT? They would be in for a lot of nitpicking and personal attacks if they don’t toe the NIT line. No one needs that kind of stress in his life. I can’t believe that any incumbents filed to run again. I think all the strident negativity on NIT is one reason why there are no opponents in some of the races. Who needs it. Even Pete isn’t up to it.
I’m not saying there don’t need to be changes on the council or mayor. I’m saying that no one other than NIT people wants those jobs because of the trashing that goes on with them here. Eventually, the current council and mayor may get sick and tired of the mauling and quit running and neither will anyone else in the “mainstream establishment” because they don’t want the grief. Then the people on here can have at it, become the powerful, and read all the criticism about their actions or lack of it in the Globe.
However, I predict a landslide victory for the current council, except Jodi may win, because people in town really don’t want a cat fight on the council. They want things to run smoothly and civilly without histrionics unless there is proof of misconduct.

@Katie-And you are the mayors wife’s friend. You might just be showing a little favortism your self on this subject. There is no way Solberg beats Matt. She is a waste of space.
Or you could disregard what the news media prints/broadcasts and continue to make decisions based you your own beliefs.

As far as I am concerned you can throw Tornquist in there with them. All he does is look down his nose at everyone. In my opinion he is an elitist snob.
You are exactly right on that call. I would vote for whoever runs against him. In my ward I am voting for Draper, Hickey doesn’t do anything at the meetings, he can just wait for the mayor at the bar after the meeting is over.
@2nd ward-I am told that Leonard Foster is going to run against Tornquist. Leonard mad a mistake last time but at least he is honest and will represent all of the people.
