CHARLES CITY – Police didn’t divulge much information, but a potentially tragic situation was investigated last week by Charles City police.
What is known is that a citizen reported to police in Charles City that a baby was in a car seat on a riding lawn mower. Police officers went to the area of 19th Avenue and Kenwood Avenue, on the city’s north side, to investigate. At the scene, an officer discovered that a baby seat was mounted to the mower. Police did not indicate that any actions were taken at that point.
A child safety expert told NIT that mounting a baby car seat to a riding mower is “extremely dangerous” and that if the child fell out, the child could be run over and killed by the blades rotating underneath the mower.
“It’s just common sense,” the source said. “You don’t mount a baby onto a riding mower. It might not specifically be illegal, but the dangerous nature of the situation should show anyone that the person who did this is endangering a child. In actuality, it is not legal to use a car baby seat for anything other than inside an automobile.”
