WATERLOO – On February 6th, at approximately 9:51 PM, Waterloo Police were sent to an apartment complex located at 3621 Sager Avenue on a report of someone laying on the ground with a gun lying next to them.
Upon arrival, officers located a female with a single gunshot wound. The Medical Examiner arrived on scene. The body was sent to Ankeny for an autopsy. The gunshot wound appeared to be self-inflicted.
The victims name was not released.
Hey Matt-I don’t see the problem here. No where in the article did you mention her name. If it was in the police report it is newsworthy. Don’t pay any attention to Happy Gay, he needs his diaper changed.
As a matter of fact, this information is straight from a Waterloo Police Department source who released it to the world. It can be read anywhere by anyone who understands English. Besides, ignoring suicide is like ignoring any problem and hoping it goes away. I suppose if someone shoots themselves in the middle of the mall we should ignore that too, no report, as if it never happened. Sorry, we will report it, and you can choose to read it or not.
Never can tell, maybe it was an elaborate murder made to look like a suicide.
With all due respect Matt, without a purposeful background story news like this kind of seems meaningless at least front and center.
Matt and I have had words about this in the past. IMO news media should respect the family of suicide victims and make these nonstories and not report the name of the victims. You don’t report on John Average Doe dying of a heart attack. There is no difference.
I can show you news clippings from a Mason City newspaper that have written in detail about suicides. One such story is from a high school classmate of mine who hung himself. The story details how he died, where he was found, who found him and their reactions.
