On July 28 at about 7:36 PM, the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a boat containing four people that had capsized north of Bel-Air beach, a popular public access area.

Upon arrival, sheriff’s deputies observed another boater that had stopped and helped the sinking boaters, by pulling the capsized boat, and giving the four occupants of the boat a ride back to Bel-Air beach dock.

Once on shore, it was determined that the occupants of the boat, who were not wearing life jackets at the time, were identified as Joel Figueroa-Ramirez age 24, Adrian Reyes age 26, Alfredo Reyes age 24, and Andres Espana, age 24, all of Storm Lake. Deputies determined that the occupants of the boat left the dock at Bel-Air beach, and after leaving, the boat started take on water from the high waves and started to sink.

Iowa DNR and Lake Patrol officers also responded to the scene of the incident.

Following further investigation all four occupants of the boat were cited by DNR for not having lifejackets in the boat.
