Free Comic Book Day a big success at Oak Leaf Comics (photos)

MASON CITY – A steady stream of comic book lovers flowed into the Oak Leaf Collectible Comic Book Store on Saturday to celebrate Free Comic Book Day.
“People come in to celebrate comic books,” said Mike Tickal, owner of Oak Leaf Collectibles, “Free comics are celebrated nationwide, in Europe… it’s celebrated world wide.”
Two sets of brothers came in the store dressed as their favorite comic book hero, Spiderman.  First was Samuel and Daniel who came in with mom, Amanda, and Grandpa, Bruce.  A few minutes later, in walks Caleb, age 6 and Josiah, age 3, with their Spiderman fan dad Joe Desannoy, all from Rochester.
A huge table was set up and a big selection of free comic books, posters, pins and sports cards were available for people to grab.  “Everybody can have three comics,” said Tickal.
There was so much more to look at, as Alex Britt, a Sophmore from Ventura, could tell you.  “I’m a huge Doctor Who fan,” said Alex.  ” I really want this Tardis, but can’t really afford it right now.  I like the Dalek too, but love the Tardis.”  Only Doctor Who fans would know what Alex is talking about.
The comic books store also had a table for the North Iowa Youth Center.  Tom Homan was asking people if they wanted to sign up for door prizes to be given away at a later date.  An artist, Gregg Paulsen, was also available throughout the day to draw your favorite comic scene.  He would draw whatever the fan picked out.
