MASON CITY – Excess funds left over from the renovation project at Mason City High School (MCHS) may be spent as early as 2014 on updating an area of the school that is over 50 years old.

According to School Finance Officer Ramona Jeffrey, Terry McCarthy of Yaggy Colby and Associates presented an update this week to the Mason City School Board on the different completed phases of the renovation at the JAMS/MCHS campus and what areas are left to renovate.

The next phase might be from the commons area at MCHS to the corridor on the east side of the gym. This area still has all the old mechanical and electrical which is 50 years old.

The board will be discussing the possible renovations in more depth at the December 2nd committee of the whole meeting.

A source who attended the school board meeting told NIT that there is up to $4 million or more in funds that “must” be spent by a certain date or the funds could be lost.

Some elementary schools may see security improvements paid for by the excess funds.

And all of you bleeding hearts will fall for the same old song and dance like you did in september. Jack McCort might be an ole hoot but he was right this time and Im proud to say I voted NO!

Just a month ago they were broke and crying for more? What a difference 30 days make

Has the High School even been around for 50 years. I though it opened in the late 60’s, 1968 or 1969. If so then how can the mechanical and electrical be 50 years old?

@Iowa Viking-I worked on the construction of the gym in 1963. Tied in the steel on the thing. So, it was under construction then but not yet built. The damn thing was built on swamp land that no one else wanted.

If they have all that money left, why do they need more. Do you think we were lied to?

Spend, spend, spend. Then cry for more.
