MASON CITY – Sources told NorthIowaToday.com that NIACC intends to reduce it work force and has sent letters to employees this week indicating its intention.

One source said that work reduction notices were being given to employees due to dwindling rainy day funds and/or other funding challenges at the community college. ” It was also told to some staff that rainy day funds are no longer there.”

Currently, NIACC is searching for a new president. Former NIACC President Debb Derr was paid over $182,000 and was given what some called a “golden parachute” when she left town for Oregon, including a $75,000 retention bonus if she stayed on as NIACC President for five years.   When her five years at NIACC were up, she took a pay cut to go to Mt. Hood Community College, taking an annual salary of $177,000 plus numerous other perks.  The salary and benefits package for a new NIACC president has not yet been set.

According to its website, NIACC is also seeking adjunct instructors.  NIACC is also building new dorms at this time at a cost of about $25 million.

Gotta pay for that Golden Parachute for Derr somehow. The problem is it is always the lowest paid and the people who need the job the most that get cut. The high paid (decision makers) are not going to cut themselves. Just doesn’t work that way.

and people think education is about the kids. Fooled again

Seems like Mason City looses two jobs for every one it gains.

Appears you may have benefited from a little time at NIACC!
