SIOUX CITY – A man who illegally possessed a firearm was sentenced February 9, 2012, to more than 11 years in federal prison.
Lonnie Wade Sigler, 37, from Humboldt, Iowa, received the prison term after an October 18, 2011, guilty plea to being a felon in possession of a firearm. Sigler was previously convicted of theft in the second degree in Polk County Iowa District Court on August 10, 1993; conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine in Polk County Iowa District Court on April 2, 1999; and conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine in Delaware County Iowa District Court on July 17, 2001.
At the guilty plea, Sigler admitted to illegally possessing a firearm. On July 21, 2009, in Webster County, Iowa, law enforcement officers were involved in a high speed pursuit with Sigler. During the pursuit, Sigler fled on foot after the vehicle became disabled. Officers recovered a Hi-Point 9mm handgun near where Sigler abandoned the vehicle. Officers also seized an ammunition clip inside the vehicle.
Sigler was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett. Sigler was sentenced to 142 months’ imprisonment. A special assessment of $100 was imposed. He must also serve a 5-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
Sigler is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
This case was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a cooperative local, state and federal program aimed at the enhanced prosecution of gun crimes.
