MASON CITY – Kay Sloan of Mason City was honored at the Mason City Council meeting on the evening of August 6th for her purchase and donation of a sculpture to the Mason City Library.

Kay Sloan purchased the sculpture Circle of Friends for $36,000 and donated it to the Mason City Public Library for permanent display.  The sculpture depicts a child reading a book inside a circle.

A Sculpture Unveiling Ceremony was held prior to the council meeting, in the Circle Drive of the Library to honor and thank Kay Sloan for her donation.

Kay Sloan is a member of the Mason City Library Library Board of Trustees and a former teacher.

I am sure there are much better ways she can donate $36,000 to the city. We don’t need any more dang statues in town.

Then go back to school, get an education and then get a good paying job with benefits and start saving money….Short of an inheritance, or winning the lottery, that’s how the rest of us do it!!

Get off the pity pot and get with the world of hard work!!!

If you believe you are going to “think” your way into a better quality of life, you are sadly mistaken.

If the woman has the money, and spent it, then it is not imaginary. There is such a thing as savings, second incomes and so forth that produce income – real money. How they spend it, or invest it, is up to them.

A great example of this is the Alumni from the High School I attended. They contribute yearly to sponsor students, or provide money for athletics. Sometimes as much as this woman gave for the statue. They earned it, they do what they think is right in supporting the institution that gave them a good education. Again, that is not imaginary.

Just because you cannot, or are not willing to produce the same efforts, does not mean that you should slight them for the profit they earn from theirs. I might remind you that they started out the same as you or I from High School. The difference is the choices they made as adults, the same choices we all make.

Jealousy is not the best of virtues.

It’s a market position. The seller prices an item to what the market will bare. If no takers, eventually it will be reduced. However, one cannot gauge prices on what one in Mason City is willing to pay.

That is why Mason City has dice, and Chicago, a Picasso.

I believe you said “I wish I were part of that imaginary economy some people live in.” You better back peddle harder if you don’t want to look envious.

@Peter L.-you know what they say-art is in the eye of the beholder. As much as $36,000 is a lot of money to a lot of people, it was her money to do whatever she wants with it. There are lot of rich people that piss away money on all kinds of things that mean nothing. Look at the vacation our socialist president takes all the time. How many poor people do you think that kind of money would feed?

We really couldn’t get that from “I wish I were part of that imaginary economy some people live in.” Sarcasm is print is rarely a good idea.

Sooooooo a lottery is still cool you just want better odds?

@Peter L.-The ones make the most off the lottery is the government. The rest is just a rip off. If they spread it out like they should no one would buy it. Unfortunately, I am one of the dumb ones that donate to the cause all the time. What other chance do I have to be a millionaire.

The government already does that.

Some people work and contribute to that economy, you don’t

Ridiculous– but at least it wasn’t taxpayers money!!

What’s “ridiculous” about it? It’s a beautiful sculpture and the library is the perfect place for it. I’m grateful to Ms. Sloan for the donation.

Same here. How individuals spend their money is up to them. Thank you Kay Sloan.
