Mason City woman says van was following kids

MASON CITY – A Mason City woman who wishes to remain anonymous said today that late this week in the evening hours a van was following children on the city’s southwest side and wanted to alert people to be on the lookout.

“I had quite the scare,” the woman said.

She said that her young daughter was playing with a friend outside their apartment complex when soon thereafter the friend came back and knocked on the door, saying that she didn’t know where her friend (the woman’s daughter) was.

“My heart just dropped as she said some van had been following them,” she continued.  “I went downstairs and a couple adults had said that (the girl) had ran and told one of them” about the van.

“Well come to find out this old dark blue Chevy van with a decal on the side and the front bumper falling off had followed them and yelled at them to stop and come there,” she said.

“The girls ran with some friends to find the nearest adult and they called the cops.  There was a male driving and a female in the passenger seat (in her late 20s they thought).”

The woman’s daughter had run from the van and was only missing briefly.

Mason City police this evening confirmed that they did respond to a call about a suspicious vehicle on Thursday evening at about 9 PM.

Sgt. Steve Klemas explained that residents in the South Grover Avenue area described a blue van with a decal on one side and a bumper in bad condition but did not locate it. The drivers had made contact verbally with children.
