Scattered rain doesn’t scatter the crowd Saturday in East Park

by Jody Spear and Kelly Meyer –

MASON CITY – Despite the late afternoon rain shower, and the threat of more, the first night of Band Fest at East Park was a success.

From the carnival, to the Car Cruise-in and Exhibit, to the Dweebs concert in the park, people were everywhere enjoying, eating, laughing, riding and just walking around taking in the sites and sounds.

For the second year, the Dweebs (pictured, top) took to the stage to kick off the music of Bandfest in the park. The people enjoyed their mixture of different types of music as well as their uplifting personality with the crowd, even allowing some audience members to participate a little. Last year, the band members said they wanted to come back and this year said, “We’re excited and happy to be back!”

You would think that the very protective Classic Car owners would keep their pride and joy tucked away in a nice, dry garage, but they were there to display and talk about their cars. They were not only at the park, but driving around town, like the “good ole’ days.”

The carnival was filled with kids and adults having fun on the rides and playing games. The food court across the bridge had any kind of carnival goodies you’d want.

A very good start to a busy weekend for Band Fest and Memorial Day Weekend, with more to come on Saturday and Sunday.
