WGolf: Trojans beat darkness, rain to finish third round of nationals

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Despite the third round of the NJCAA Women’s National Golf Championship not getting completed on Wednesday due to darkness, all three NIACC golfers were able to get their rounds of golf in.

The afternoon session, which the Trojans were a part of, had two long rain delays.  The Trojans played some of their rounds in the rain, but finished their rounds before it became too dark.  The rain delays forced the last 12 groups to end their rounds early.

“The call of unplayable conditions came about two holes too late I thought, but I’m glad we got our rounds in today so we don’t have to come back and finish in the morning,” NIACC golf coach Chris Frenz said.

Mikayla Smith (Fr., Mason City, IA) led NIACC with a round of 83, while Alexandria Eckenrod (Fr., Mason City, IA) and Sarah Steinauer (Fr., Clarinda, IA) both shot 96 rounds.  No one gained or lost any positions because of the unfinished rounds.

“Mikayla played great today, she’s gotten stronger each day and followed up a good performance yesterday with a solid 83 today,” said Frenz. “Alexandria started on the back nine and shot a 44 before the rains came.  She was impacted greatly by the unplayable conditions on the front and shot 52 for a total of 96.  Sarah shot a 54 on her first nine holes, but bounced back with her lowest nine-hole score of the tournament with 42 on the front for a 96.

“I’ve said it all week long, but they have all played as hard as they could, never any give up in any of them….and we’re still trying to get a high finish.  We all had our goals coming into this tournament, and each one can still achieve those goals.”

The Trojans will start the final round of the tournament at 7:50 tomorrow because of threatening weather in the forecast for Thursday.
