NIACC track: Edmond claims national title in heptathlon

LEVELLAND, Texas  – NIACC sophomore Tanesha Edmond (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) won the heptathlon at the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships at South Plains College on Wednesday.

Edmond overtook Iowa Central’s Shawanna Steplight in the final leg of the event by winning the 800-meter run in 2:22.97.  She trailed Steplight by 40 points entering the 800.

Edmond entered Wednesday with a 68-point lead over Steplight, but lost the lead after placing eighth in the long jump to start Wednesday’s events. Edmond followed up with a 10th in the javelin, before winning the 800.  Her 800 time needed to be better than Steplight’s by 3.05 seconds to make her the national champion. Steplight finished in 2:43.93.

Edmond missed qualifying for the 400-meter hurdles finals by placing ninth in 1:06.40.  She will compete in the high jump on Thursday.

Men’s thrower Trey Taylor (Fr., Bloomfield, CT) placed fourth in the javelin with a toss of 52.98 meters (173’7”).  His finish gave the men’s team its first points of the meet with five.  Lance Maxwell (So., Racine, WI) recorded a 10th-place finish in the shot put at 14.88 meters (48’10”).

RJ Harris (So., Des Moines, IA) rounded out the men’s individual finishes by placing 11th in the steeplechase in a time of 10:20.06.  He qualified for the finals tomorrow.

The men also had a pair of relay teams compete on Thursday.  The 4×800-meter relay placed 13th in 7:58.17.  That team consisted of Harris, Jonny Worley (Fr., Greene, IA), Andrew Corcoran (So., Sumner, IA), and OJ Ojullu (Fr., Worthington, MN).  The 4×400-meter team of Eric Peters (Fr., Sioux City, IA), Nako Omot (Fr., Worthington, MN), Brock Schultz (Fr., Rockwell, IA), and Corcoran placed 16th in 3:22.55.

The women also had a number of individuals and a couple of relays compete as well.  Darcy Nelson (Fr., Lake Mills, IA) was 14th in the 800 in a time of 2:24.96 and 16th in the heptathlon with 2886 points.  Ashley Ubbelohde (So., Waterloo, IA) was 18th in the steeplechase with a time of 13:55.73, and Emma Pogreba (Fr., Browerville, MN) was 23rd in the 1500-meters in 5:53.15.

The women’s 4×100- and 4×400-meter relay teams both finished 15th.  The 4×100 of Hillary Garvey (Fr., Hudson, IA), Caila Jones (So., Spirit Lake, IA), Samoane Waddy (So., Boone, IA) and Abby Muhlenbruch (Fr., Latimer, IA) finished in 51.79.  The 4×400 finished in 4:17.03, and was made up of Garvey, Muhlenbruch, Jones, and Nelson.

Both NIACC teams will finish the national meet and their seasons tomorrow.
