County “drug take back program” proves successful

MASON CITY – An on-going program implemented by the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office has proved to be a success.

The “Drug Take Back Program” was implemented in June of 2011.  It allows the public to drop off unwanted prescription drugs at the sheriff’s office, located at 17262 Lark Aveneue.  The program provides a county residents a safe option for disposal of over-the-counter and prescription medications that are no longer needed.

A goal of the program is to keep the medications out of the hands of unauthorized persons and out of the landfill where the can ultimately seep into the water supply.

The sheriff’s office says that since the program was started, the office “has seen a consistently strong demand for this service from the public.”

The public is reminded that service is open from 8:00 a.m. until 4:40 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Unwanted medications should be in their original packaging and liquids must be in sealed containers.
