LIMA, PERU – President Joe Biden completed a whirlwind trip to the Southern Hemisphere this weekend, sitting down for talks with world leaders, including the President of China, as he pushed for greater cooperation on business and climate issues.
“Yesterday (Saturday) I met with President Xi Jinping of China for a candid, constructive discussion on a range of bilateral, regional, and global issues,” President Biden tweeted. This meeting and others the President participated in took place at the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Lima, Peru.
“We both underscored the importance of maintaining a responsible channel of communication between the United States and China,” the President continued.
“Over the last four years, President Xi and I have proven that the U.S. and China can have a close relationship that is focused on competition, not conflict.”
The President also met with President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea and Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru of Japan, Peru President Dina Boluarte Zegarra, among others.
“I met with the leaders of APEC to reaffirm our commitment to building inclusive, resilient, and sustainable economies across the Asia-Pacific,” the President explained.

After his time in Peru, President Biden visited the Amazon rainforest, and re-iterated his commitment to save the environment:
“I’m proud to be the first sitting U.S. President to visit the Amazon rainforest. We must recommit to protecting our planet. Our world’s forests are one of the most powerful solutions we have to fight climate change.
“Each minute the world is chopping down the equivalent of 10 soccer fields worth of forests. That’s why my Administration has been a leader internationally in the fight to end and reverse deforestation by 2030.”
