AMES, Iowa – Iowa State’s Ryak Finch and Joe Cozart recorded pins and Andrew Sorenson avenged his only loss as the No. 13 Cyclone wrestlers rolled over Wisconsin, 36-3 in the first round of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Midwest Regional Sunday in Hilton Coliseum. No. 23 Virginia Tech beat Northern Iowa, 20-17 in the other first-round match. Iowa State wrestles Oregon State in the second round at 1 p.m. CST. No. 5 Iowa wrestles Virginia Tech at 1 p.m.
Finch pinned Austin Hietpas in 1:36 at 125 pounds to get Iowa State off to a strong start. Cozart’s pin of Frank Baer came in 4:21 at 149 pounds. Sorenson, ranked fourth nationally, improved his personal record to 24-1 after beating No. 11 Ben Jordan, 3-2. Jordan had upset Sorenson, 8-4 at the Midlands in December.
The rout was Iowa State’s largest victory over Wisconsin since a 38-3 win on Feb. 11, 1972.
