Relay for Life holds sledding competition at East Park

by Jody Spear –

MASON CITY – Saturday afternoon was a sunny, temperature friendly day for the “Cardboard Classic” sledding competition at the East Park Sledding Hill in Mason City.

The Relay for Life Team, Night Crawlers, asked people to design and build a person-powered sled made out of cardboard.

According to Nathan Hanson, “There were only six or seven sleds entered. One of them was my nephew, Caydn Hanson, a cancer survivor.”

Caydn (pictured), at four years old, was diagnosed with brain cancer. “He had a tumor that wrapped around his brain and entered the brains core,” said Nathan. “He had surgery and chemo at the young age of four and he’s now eleven. About two months ago, he had an MRI done in Rochester. When the test came back it showed that it’s still clear.”

Caydn has been at other Relay for Life events, such as the Race for a Cure at the I-35 Speedway last summer.

“I was participating in the Cardboard Race for the Relay for Life, I like doing this stuff for cancer people the because I had cancer and I wish it would all just go away,” said Caydn.

When asked if he participates in a lot of Relay for Life events, Caydn excitedly said, “Yeah, I got to meet Lance Armstrong.”

Cyclist Lance Armstrong  is best known for winning the Tour de France seven times from 1999 to 2005.  He is also a cancer survivor and a full-time cancer fighter.

The Relay for Life Team wanted to see how creative people could be with their cardboard sleds. There were prizes for best design, the longest run, the best wipe-out and the best spirit.

Caydn got the prize for the Best Spirit.

All proceeds will go to the local Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society fundraising efforts.
