The Mason City City Council met Tuesday night and moved forward to form a plan to consolidate TIF (Tax Increment Financing) districts in the city. Mayor Eric Bookmeyer said Clear Lake had made the same move about eight years ago and it worked out for them. Don Nelson and Jeff Marsters were opposed, claiming the move was part of a plan to set up financing options for a possible multi-purpose arena project. “I’m disappointed we are not open to the public and telling them the truth,” Marsters said. Marsters and Nelson still voted “yes,” though, and it passed 6-0.
The council also OK’d a plan to send a letter to RAGBRAI officials asking to host an overnight stop on next year’s ride.
Also approved was a sidewalk program to fix sidewalks mostly in the northwest part of the city and they also approved a speed limit change from 25 mph to 30 mph on 15th Street SW between Federal Ave. and Monroe Ave.
Finally, the council heard a presentation on a Residential Urban Revitalization Plan. The plan offers tax abatement to home owners who add value to their property.
