Romney ad falsely claims that Jeep is moving manufacturing to China

By Seema Mehta, Los Angeles Times –

AVON LAKE, Ohio — In a sign of continued concern over the political impact of his opposition to the auto bailout, Mitt Romney is now airing an ad that blames President Barack Obama for sending auto companies into bankruptcy and erroneously implies that the president’s actions prompted a car manufacturer to send jobs overseas.

Thousands of jobs in the upper Midwest were tied to the auto bailout — $80 billion in federal loans to General Motorsand Chrysler—that many credit for saving the industry. For months Obama has hammered Romney for his opposition to the bailout.

A new ad being aired by Romney says Obama caused Jeep’s parent company — Chrysler—to be sold to an Italian company that plans to move Jeep production overseas. While it is true that Chrysler may produce Jeeps in China under its Fiat owners, that represents an expansion for Chinese buyers; no American jobs are to be lost.

“Who will do more to support the auto industry? Not Barack Obama,” the ad says. “Mitt Romney has a plan to help the auto industry.”

“Obama took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy and sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China. Mitt Romney will fight for every American job.”

Chrysler weighed in to reassure Ohioans that no manufacturing is being moved out of state, and the Obama campaign denounced the ad throughout the day Monday.

“Now it turns out that Jeep is reopening in China because they made so much money here they can afford to do it and they are going on with their plans here,” former President Bill Clinton said at a rally in Youngstown. “They put out a statement today saying that it was the biggest load of bull in the world that they would consider shutting down their American operation.”

The Obama campaign launched a competing ad noting Chrysler’s statement and reminding voters that Romney opposed the bailout. Vice President Joe Biden called Romney’s claims “bizarre.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, have they no shame? I mean, what? Romney will say anything, absolutely anything to win, it seems,” Biden said. “But he can’t run from the truth.”

The Romney campaign did not respond to questions about whether the claim was misleading.

The debate over the auto bailout is of prime importance in Ohio, where Obama has held a minimal lead in most polls that Romney is feverishly trying to surmount. Every winning Republican presidential candidate has carried the state, and losing it would make Romney’s path to 270 electoral votes much more difficult.

As Election Day nears, the Romney campaign is continuing to argue that Obama followed Romney’s prescription to save the industry.

Obama and independent analysts say that it was necessary to offer federal loans to the companies to get them through bankruptcy because at the time banks were no longer lending to struggling industries. (Because credit was frozen, Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush, gave GM and Chrysler a bridge loan in December 2008.) The federal loans were offered and the companies are now profitable.

Romney opposed the federal bailout and instead favored private lending backed by loan guarantees. He also backed the companies’ entrance into bankruptcy, although that is not mentioned in the ad or by his supporters.

My boss said and I quote, “if Obama gets re elected then the two full time positions we planned to hire will be reduced to part time to avoid Obamacare.”

THAT’S WHAT WILL HAPPEN ACROSS OUR COUNTRY..WATCH.

Full time will be reduced to part time or no hire will be made at all.

I have heard other employers say nearly the same thing. Full time hiring will be reduced to some part time positions in order to try and get around Obamacare.

Keep in mind though, in most cases this will only effect those of us who work and those that want to work. Society is becoming so liberal (lazy) that a good many people will still be content to just lay around the house all day and let the rest support them.

Why are you stealing my thunder?

Obama lied on national tv regarding Libya attack. FLAT OUT LIED.WE ALL HEARD IT.HE KNEW. HE LIED.

There are eight GM plants in China and they are going to move the R & D departments there also. I am sorry but I did not see or hear Romney say Jeep is being built in China. I truly believe it was reported incorrectly. Many companies produce some of their products in China and some in the US, the same as Toyota does.

If you would watch the TV ad he ran in Ohio about this you would see that he did indeed say Jeep was moving. He is getting desperate now and will resort to anything to get one more vote. Shame on him and those that support this kind of campaigning.

This man lies and lies. The only thing worse are the people who will vote for him.

They all ie. It just remains to be seen who is the worse. In my unbiased opinion it is Obama.

i agree senior..Obama lies all the time

Heaven help us if Romney gets in. If his lies are this blatant while he’s campaigning, what in the world would we be in for if he’s elected? HE CANNOT BE TRUSTED. WHY CAN’T EVERYONE SEE THIS?!?

You say that romney is lying yet you have no proof but when obama goes on national tv and says the attacks in lybia are because of a video and then they find PROOF that he knew right away it was terrorists, he lied, you still say he can be trusted. I would be willing to bet that if a man named Jim Jones came up to you and said I have this really tasty coolaide, here drink some, I bet you would.

Obama lied during the debate when he said that Romney wanted Detroit to go bankrupt. Romney wanted the government to give Detroit loan guarantees instead of giving them a handout. Even David Letterman took Obama to task a week ago for not being truthful about that matter.

That should have been @Just my opinion. Sorry, I replied to the wrong person.

werent we lied to about the W.M.D.s? how many lives did that lie cost?

We were lied to by an Iraqi informer who wanted us to topple Saddam Hussein. Members of Congress saw the same intelligence that Pres. Bush saw. Remember that Biden voted FOR the war. So did these Democratic Senators: Baucus (MT) Bayh (IN) Breaux (LA)Cantwell (WA) Carnahan (MO) Carper (DE) Cleland (GA) Clinton (NY) Daschle (SD) Dodd (CT) Dorgan (ND) Edwards (NC) Feinstein (CA) Harkin (IA) Hollings (SC) Johnson (SD) Kerry (MA) Kohl (WI) Landrieu (LA) Lieberman (CT) Lincoln (AR) Miller (GA) Nelson (FL) Nelson (NE) Reid (NV) Rockefeller (WV) Schumer (NY) Torricelli (NJ)

We were not lied to about WMD’s in iraq, they were there; we were just lied to when they said they were not there.

Well BJ Clinton, If they made so much money why don’t they pay back the people that got screwed so they could prop up the unions. It amazes me this serial rapist is held in such high regard by idiots on the left

Nice, Dave

I did read a story on Yahoo that Fiat is the major owner of Crysler right now. And they are thinking about moving some of the work to there Fiat plant in China. Maybe Romney was right. I also read that GM is loosing thousands of dollars on every Volt sold. When the cost of building one is figured in.

another lie. suprise, suprise. Everytime he opens his mouth out comes another lie.

@happy Guy-you are talking about Clinton of course. (I did not have sex with that woman). The man who lied to the country when he was president and turned the White House into a Whore House. Yeah, like we would believe anything he said. It is only the fools on the left that fall for that crap. Romney is correct and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to wake up. They all move overseas and they all say it is an expansion and then when things slow down it is the U.S. that gets cut back because they are not a profitable.

LVS, I thought in one of your posts you stated you were an independent voter. Have you ever liked a Democrat or voted for one? You seem to put down every Democratic President and Congress person. Is there a Democrat who measures up to your standards?

@bodacious-As a matter of fact I voted for Carter (that was a mistake) nice guy but a terrible president and I voted for Clinton the first time (another mistake) I believed him the first time but then when the lies and womanising started I figured out what he was. I almost voted for Obama but figured out there was no way he could follow through with all the promises he made (I was right) he was a lier. I thought about voting for Obama again this time but when he played politic with our people in Liba that finished that and the lies he made over Obamacare was another nail in the coffin. Robbing medicare to fund his welfare just doesn’t cut it with me.
