Dominic Jude Garrett was born April 25, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City. He was named in honor of Saints Dominic and Jude, and soon after his birth, was dedicated to God by Sr. Mary Bonita Determan — a testament to the deep faith and love that surrounded his life from the very beginning.
The youngest of three, Dominic was the cherished baby of the family, joining his older siblings, William and Angelia, with whom he shared an especially close bond. Dominic attended Mason City High School and was known among his family and friends for his warm heart, easygoing nature, the most beautiful hazel eyes, and a smile that could light up a room. He once remarked that he believed one of life’s greatest gifts was kindness for others, and he tried to live that philosophy every day.
Dominic was an animal lover through and through. Over the years, he cared for his beloved pet lizard, Serena, as well as the family dogs, Phantom and Chuco. He currently had two cats, Midnight and Jinx — both of whom he adored, even though he often joked that Jinx was that “rat-faced cat.”
He was a gifted violinist, having played with the Mason City High School Orchestra, and his music brought joy to those around him. Dominic also enjoyed playing chess and after teaching his grandpa to play, they would often play matches together. He also liked gaming on his Xbox, especially playing Overwatch and Fate/Grand Order, going for walks, and taking family trips to the Mall of America. He loved sharing meals with his family, whether cooking at home or going out to dinner, and he never turned down a slice of cheesecake.
Although Dominic’s time on earth was far too short, his family celebrated him even through their grief. On what would have been his 18th birthday, his cousin Belicia provided balloons and cake for Dominic, reminding everyone that love lives on — even through sorrow.
Dominic will be deeply missed by his mother, Francesca (Pearce) Garrett; sisters, Angelia Garrett and her boyfriend, Will and Kenzie Horst; grandparents, Gerald Ponce and Julie Morehead; great grandma, Victoria Ponce; aunt, Regina Pearce and her significant other, Donnie; uncle, Fidel Ponce; and cousins, Angelica, Esperanza, Adina, Donnie, Jr., and Belicia; as well as his extended family and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his brother, William “Willie” Whipple; aunt, Julie Ponce; and great grandparents, Lupe Ponce, Walter F. Pearce, and Rose Pearce Barnes.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at Epiphany Parish – Holy Family Catholic Church, 722 N. Adams Ave, Mason City.
