Albert Abbas, 90, of Ackley, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2024 at his home in Ackley. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Friday, September 6, 2024 at St. John’s U.C.C. in Ackley with burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday at the Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley.
Albert Abbas was born November 2, 1933 in Iowa Falls to Henry A. and Ella (Groenenberg) Abbas. He went to country school at Sunnyside in Franklin County for five years before moving to Grundy County where he attended German #9 through eighth grade. Albert attended Ackley High School and graduated in 1952.
After graduation, he was drafted into the Army in 1953. Albert was in the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps and was stationed in Germany for 15 months. Upon returning home, he picked up milk and cream for Cleves Creamery and after his discharge, attended Ellsworth Community College for one year. He went on to work for Bill Allen in Waterloo laying carpet.
Albert and Marilyn (Cobie) were united in marriage on October 6, 1956, at St. John’s U.C.C. in Ackley. The two moved to Hudson where he began working for Waterloo Valve Spring in Waterloo for three years. He started farming in Ackley in March 1959 on a farm south of Ackley where Jon Keninger lives now. They then moved to Younker’s farm and lived there for eight years. He had row crops, chickens, hogs, and cattle. Albert and Marilyn moved into Ackley to their present home in 1970.
Albert continued farming and laid carpet for Fritz Furniture until he suffered a heart attack. After recuperation, he continued to farm and worked part time at the Ackley Food Processors and Ackley Country Club. He retired in 1998 due to visual impairment.
In 2013, Albert was involved in a farm accident but recovered. He was hit with a farm tractor while mowing at the farm.
Albert went on an Honor Flight in 2014. In 2017, he received the Melvin Jones Award from AG Lions. He golfed in the TEE Tournament for visually impaired and handicapped veterans, attended Cast Away Disabilities for visually impaired and handicapped veterans and also went fishing with Castaways, a veterans with disabilities fishing group, at Ely, Minnesota and Honey Creek Resort all for over twenty years. Albert was a long-time member of St. Johns Church, since 1947.
When his vision was better, he enjoyed building and repairing toys for himself and others and restoring the family 530 John Deere Tractor. Albert enjoyed his coffee group and taking charge of putting up the Avenue of Flags at the Oakwood Cemetery. He was especially proud of the time he spent with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Albert is survived by his wife Marilyn, son Mike (Paula) Abbas of Ackley, daughter Jane (Dave) Hensing of Iowa Falls, grandchildren Ryan (Cait) Abbas, Katie (Alf) Cobb, Joseph (Whitney) Hensing, Lindsey (James) Borlaug, and great-grandchildren Lorelei, Harper and Palmer Abbas, Eli and Maren Cobb, Evelyn Borlaug and Lorelai, James and Eleanor Hensing, sisters-in-law Susan Abbas and Janice (Carl) Guldager.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ella, and his brothers Henry, George, Harvey, and Harold.
