Two motorists killed in wrong-way crash on Highway 20 in Northern Iowa

Two motorists were killed Tuesday in a wrong-way crash on Highway 20 in Northern Iowa, according to the Iowa State Patrol. According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, 139 people have died in Iowa traffic crashes so far in 2026 as of Thursday, July 2.

WEBSTER CITY — Two motorists were killed Tuesday in a wrong-way crash on Highway 20 in Northern Iowa, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

The crash happened at about 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2026, on westbound Highway 20 at mile marker 140 in Hamilton County.

According to the State Patrol, a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Joseph Kennedy, 69, of Alden, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 20. A 2020 Ram 1500 driven by Aaron Scott Gomez, 40, of Harlingen, Texas, was traveling westbound on Highway 20.

The State Patrol says the Silverado struck the Ram in the inside westbound lane.

After the collision, the Silverado came to rest in the median. The Ram came to rest on the outside shoulder.

Kennedy was pronounced dead at the scene. Gomez was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the report.

The crash report says Kennedy was not wearing a seat belt. Gomez was listed as wearing a seat belt.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, Webster City Fire and EMS, and Tony’s Towing.

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, 139 people have died in Iowa traffic crashes so far in 2026 as of Thursday, July 2. The DOT says fatality numbers for recent months are preliminary and can change.
