Opinion: Group trying to “save” Mohawk mascot “has morphed into a bigoted, intolerant and ultra-right cabal”

Phil Sanchez of Mason City

To the Editor,

The Save Our Mascot group has morphed into a bigoted, intolerant and ultra-right cabal. Their outing of a Mason City school student is an incredulously egregious and cowardly action. Not only have there been personal attacks on those who opposed their viewpoint, but some members have embraced a racist mantra espousing that “America needs more white babies” Tom Stalker and his administrators have apparently done little to reign in the incivility, it has continued unabated with no accountability. Let’s be clear, the administrators and all members of this group, are partly responsible and culpable for these comments and the outing of the student. Their silence and inaction to call out this deleterious on-line behavior speaks volumes of their malevolent intent. One adherent espoused to me “I’m not responsible for what others say” Therein lies the problem, they prefer to ignore or dismiss the horrid comments, a “not my problem” posture.  This toxic faction has now proven they will go to any lengths to achieve their aim, bullying and denigrating others all in the name of keeping their appropriated mascot. Part of their pernicious mantra is to discredit the Mohawk Tribe. Barb Hovland has stated, “the letter from the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is not signed by any one person” The document is not genuine enough for Hovland nor will it ever be, until the Mohawk Tribe is persecuted into capitulating. Honoring the Mohawk Tribe they contend, is what the mascot represents. However, they scheme to make the Mohawk Tribe’s voice inconsequential and irrelevant. Stalker has stated, “the Mohawk Tribe is not recognized in Iowa” Another attempt at demeaning the tribe’s prominence, so much for honoring them.  The prejudicial arrogance of this ugly mob has brought an inglorious and embarrassing stain on our benevolent and inclusive community.

Reading through these comments I am sickened by the hate being spewed. The disrespect for anyone who does not agree with their hate filled hearts.

Indigenous Americans have stated for many years the ways the use of their image outside of their group hurts them.

They are the experts on this as they are the ones it effects. The Mohawk Tribe has (always respectfully) requested their image not be used. We should accept their experience as to how hurtful this is and strive to not cause further harm.

The group against this change bring nothing but anger and vitriol to the table except “Because I want to!” They have not given a single valid reason to keep the name. They stomp their feet and yell and scream. They bully and out minors (a hate crime) They plug their ears to the calm, sane and reasonable discussion we were trying to have.

If these people are representative of what the “Mason City Mohawks” were and are, I believe getting rid of them is the best thing we can do as a community.

What a bunch of whiny bitches. All of you “cancel culture” imbeciles need to climb back under your rock. Most things were going just fine in our world until you damn snowflakes came out and want to change everything.

Sports names and more are not to insult anyone, they to me should serve more as an honor that your name is used.

People need to get back to work, smile more and let’s work together to make this country the America we love!!

Your comprehension is so, so very bad. The claim is that planes are flying from the border with migrants aboard who have either been picked up by the authorities as they tried to cross the border, or they were already in custody and are being moved to another location for detainment.

By the way, trump did the same thing.

Take your democrap cancel culture and please MOVE to demorat MINNESOOOOOTA. Do not let the door hit you in the rectum directly between your ears POS.

Maybe the school district could get some of the money back from Anita and Hal, to help offset the cost of the name change.

It’s about time WE start canceling these Marxist democrats. If you are the Governor you need to fire all the department directors as they are all MARXIST. The NO BAIL crap has its foot hold in Iowa. The risk assessments are skewed to put DANGEROUS CRIMINALS back on the streets based on skin color.

If you are a business owner FIRE all liberal socialist idiots immediately. It will be better for ur business as well !!

How about Mason City Union D-bags for a nick name

Why would anybody want to be connected to the mohawk indians or any indian tribe. They’re a bunch of drunken, raping (check the rape record on any res), drug using losers. Israel won against the arabs and took their land. We won against the indians and took their land. Case in point. Kinda funny. The winners never cry and whine, but watch out for those losers.

MCHS has one of the worst reputations in the state for education & athletics.
Its a great time to change the name and leave some of it behind. Start new

I never considered myself a Mohawk as a letterwinner and graduate of MCHS. When someone asks me what school I went to, I say “Mason City” not “Mason City Mohawks”. Babs Hovland, Todd Blodget, Cristy Tass and Scott Statlander are all trying to turn it into a political statement. I know why Hovland and Blodgett are doing it, and pretty sure Tass is doing for the same reason. Statlanter is doing it because he loves to claim that everybody who disagrees with him is stupid. I actually do think Blodgett and Tass got booted from the site because of their insensitive and bigoted comments.

From what we can see, Blodgett is not involve in this, if he was, this thing would of got real dirty.

Blodgett he plays mean, never let’s up. My neighbor he ran against Toddy boy’s old man, just could not believe how Todd did.

He was involved with this but the post calling out of the young lad was taken down while others remained up. Blodgett made a couple of statements meant to demean the boy and his parents. He and Tass apparently don’t like anyone who doesn’t fit into their idea of a perfect world.

You, my dear sir, are the bigot. You have never met a Mohawk Indian in your life. As long as they stay in New York or Canada, you are ok with them.

I went to MCHS and never considered myself a Mohawk. I considered myself a MCHS student. When I played baseball I considered myself a MCHS baseball player. Never even thought about the Mohawk name. The best high school names I ever heard were the cattle feeders and the clay diggers. Get creative and come up with an original mascot name.

A name is enough to honor something that was real history.
Why is everything a problem? Get a job and pay taxes!

Too bad dirty sanchez’s opinion doesn’t carry any weight with anybody. How bout your “writings” go on strike, you whiney union d-bag.

Looks like your nose is too far up some people’s asses to be able to stick it anywhere. Write a real opinion and stop going postal on other people’s articles. Your guy lost, remember that. #loser

Who is “his guy”?

OK, Call them the Mason City Dum assess.

Can’t do that. You and your friends already have that name taken.
