Mavis A. Floy, 92, of Thornton, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. Woodley Funeral Home and Crematory, Thornton is caring for Mavis and her family. Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 30, at Thornton First United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton. Visitation will be 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Monday at Woodley Funeral Home and Crematory, Thornton.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests a memorial to St. Croix Hospice, Thornton First United Methodist Church, or the Thornton EMT’s.
Mavis Arlene Johnson was born at home in Thornton November 8, 1931, a daughter of John H. and Helen (Nicolet) Johnson. She graduated from Swaledale High School. After high school Mavis worked as a telephone operator.
On June 25, 1950 Mavis was united in marriage with Marius W. Floy at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They farmed with Marius’ family in the Thornton area.
Mavis was a farm wife. She also worked at Mabb’s Grocery Store in Thornton. She took many adult education classes learning how to paint and make stained glass windows. She also enjoyed cooking, sewing, and gardening. She had made many clothes for her family and for their weddings as well. She was active in the First United Methodist Church and the garden club. She loved fishing and hunting with her family and attending their school programs and games.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Terry Ann (Jim) Dorenkamp; Marica Kim Olson; Stacey Jo (Kyle) Ritter; son-in-law Brian Buehler; 7 grandchildren: Michael (Dani) Dorenkamp; Carrie (Jason) Andersen; Jamie Dorenkamp; Heather (Keith) Eilering; Nicholas (Tiffany) Olson; Tessa Ritter (Robert Pals); Grace Ritter; 11 great grandchildren: Maximus and Haven Dorenkamp; Garret and Anthony James Andersen; Mason Dorenkamp; Katie (Tonnes) Thorland; Justin Hassebroek; Kevin (fiancé Jaymie) Hassebroek; Aubrey and Ethan Olson; Luna Mavis Ritter; great great granddaughter: Emma Thorland; brother: Robert Johnson; sister-in-law: Nola Johnson; brother-in-law: Galen (CeCelia) Pitkin; nieces, nephews and many friends.
Mavis is preceded in death by her husband in 2016; daughter Diane Lynn Buehler; son-in-law Dwight Olson; great grandson Henry Adrian Thorland; sister Marlys Pitkin and brother Roger Johnson.
