A Funeral Service for Deona Simpson, 93, of Algona, will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 24, 2024, at First United Methodist Church in Algona. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Algona. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service, at First United Methodist Church in Algona.

Deona Ruth, the daughter of Cecil and Jeanne (Stubbe) Johnston, was born July 9, 1931, in Iowa Falls, Iowa. Deona graduated from Titonka High School with the class of 1949. On June 26, 1949, she was united in marriage to R. Dwight Simpson in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. To this union they had six children.

Deona worked as a waitress, corn sorter at Pioneer, at Brougham Industries, as a school janitor and at Kmart. When she wasn’t working, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Deona would spend time knitting, bowling, and watching nearly any sport, especially if a grandchild was involved. Deona could be found nearly any Saturday in the summer supporting her kids and grandkids at the racetrack. Deona was also an avid traveler, she took grandkids on unforgettable vacations as far as North Carolina and Arizona.

She was part of the VFW Auxiliary and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Algona. She was an active volunteer at the church, serving as a Sunday School teacher for 45 years, working with Kids Club and serving countless funeral meals.

Deona died on Monday, August 19, 2024, at Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, at the age of 93.

Survivors include her children Judy McGrath, Elysburg, PA; Peggy (Andrew) Nelson, Algona; John (Merry) Simpson, West Bend; daughters-in-law, Marilyn Simpson, Algona and Kathy Simpson, Algona. She is also survived by her sister Karen Sigmund.

Deona leaves 15 grandchildren who blessed her life (but they would all agree she blessed theirs even more!). Shannon Simpson, Algona; Michelle (John) Simpson, Rome, GA; Brandon Simpson, Algona; Jean Radunz, Maple Hill; Briana Hutchison, Lake Park; Lindsay (Tim) Simpson, Britt; Lesha Simpson, Algona; Emily (Mike) Carpenter, Catawissa, PA; Christine (Jesse) Nelson, Algona; Lucas (Katie) Nelson, Lone Rock; Rachael (Alex) Ascherl, Scotts Bluff, NE; Nikole Simpson, Des Moines; Mitchell Simpson, Des Moines; Chelsea (Alex) Heldt, Rolfe; Nathan (Jessica) Simpson, Agency, MO.

Also surviving Deona are 26 great-grandchildren. Corbin (Jayden) Kohlhaas; Dalton (Jordyn) Simpson; Chloe and Remington Thompson; Lila Monson; Ivy (Riley) Smith; Nick Hutchison; Jacqueline (Kolten) Radunz; Jacob Radunz; Kyle and Kameron Carpenter; Randy, Stephan, Layne, Rayna and Ember Stammer; Oliver and Silas Nelson; Connelly, Claire, Leo, Coyle and Barrett Ascherl; Bryer and Hayes Heldt; and Arthur Dwight Simpson. Deona also had one great-great grandchild, Oliver Kohlhaas.

She is preceded in death by her husband R. Dwight (1984); sons Richard, Jim, and David; her parents; and siblings Marvin, Wally, and Carol; daughter-in-law Rose Hutchison; and grandson-in-law Jason Radunz.
